Airport Carbon Accreditation recognises and accredits the efforts of airports to manage and reduce their carbon emissions. There are four levels of certification: 'Mapping', 'Reduction', 'Optimisation' & 'Neutrality'.
What is it?
The ‘Reduction’ step of Airport Carbon Accreditation requires carbon management and progress towards a reduced carbon footprint.
How to achieve it?
To achieve this level of accreditation, an airport has to:
- Fulfil all the requirements of ‘Mapping’
- Provide evidence of effective carbon management procedures including target setting
- Show that a reduction in the carbon footprint has occurred by analysing the carbon emissions data of consecutive years.
Once an airport has measured its carbon footprint, it can work towards reducing its carbon emissions. This process is known as carbon management and involves a diverse range of measures, by which an airport should:
- show it has a low carbon/low energy policy
- show that a senior committee or body has responsibility for climate change/carbon/energy matters
- show how it communicates emissions performance to relevant stakeholders
- show it has procedures for preparing and checking an accurate carbon footprint
- monitor consumption of fuel & energy
- have carbon/energy reduction targets
- show it has programmes or control mechanisms to ensure operations minimise emissions
- show it considers emissions impact of investments
- show it undertakes awareness training about emissions for staff
- show it has a process of self assessment & auditing to monitor progress of improvement delivery
Specific examples of carbon management measures might include:
- Energy demand reduction – through audit, measurement, management, automated meter reading (AMR), automated monitoring & targeting (AM&T), well set and effective control.
- Clean energy supply – combined heat & power, renewable energy sources (on-site or off-site).
- Low energy design – standards for refurbishment and new build, compulsory inclusion of carbon reduction studies in all new projects.
- Options for alternative fuel airport vehicles (electric, hybrid, hydrogen, LPG, etc).
- Staff communications and engagement plans.
- Equal or preferential appraisal for carbon-reducing investment projects.
- Programme to examine and reduce supply-chain-related emissions.
